OK, hands up if there’s a ping-pong table, snazzy coffee machine, games room or other stress busters at your work. Does it make you more productive?
We know that having these fun breakouts in businesses can reduce stress and help maintain focus but, the harsh reality is that only 13 per cent of employees worldwide are engaged at work. In other words, only one in eight employees are psychologically committed to their jobs and likely to make positive contributions to their organisations, meaning that maybe the ping-pong table and coffee machines just aren’t cutting it. Can you imagine the cost to business when 1:8 employees are disengaged in their work?
Low levels of employee engagement in the workforce is detrimental to the success of a business. It means that a majority of employees in an organisation are unhappy, unproductive and are liable to be spreading negative attitudes and behaviours to their peers and even customers. Lack of engagement is also critical to the economic productivity and life quality in much of the world.
The question beckons, what is so wrong with our workplace culture that is causing these low levels of employee engagement and dissatisfaction?
After working with many businesses, it’s easy to see that the employee experience is being forgotten about, completely. In a lot of businesses, the focus is not on culture necessarily, but actually on sales and revenue, which you can argue is the right focus. This is a common — and totally understandable— mistake. Businesses were created to thrive, to succeed and to generate profit. However, focusing solely on this undermines those who work to bring you the success.
